Baghabari 171 MW power plant

Baghabari 171 MW power plant, Baghabari power plant used internal combustion gas engine. They are basically used as prime mover for generation. The shaft of the engine is coupled with an alternator. The plant capacity is 171MW. There are two units one is 100MW and another one is 71 MW.

 Working principle of gas turbine power plant

At Baghabari power plant a motor is used which is coupled with the compressor to remove the inertia of all components. Gas turbine uses air and natural gas to function. At first air and gas is mixed at a certain ratio. The amount of fuel and air is controlled by the fuel GCV (Gas control valve) and air IGV (Inlet guide valve). IGV opening angle are 340, 570 and 840. After that the air and gas is compressed by a compressor. Intercooler increases the pressure of compressed low pressure air. This process keeps repeating until a desired air–gas ratio is obtained. Finally, this compressed mixture is sent to internal combustion engine where the mixture is burnt in a confined space. This space is called as combustion chamber. Its temperature is about 1200° C. After combustion, the shaft of the engine starts to rotate. This shaft is coupled with the alternator. Thus, power is produced at the alternator. The exhaust gas goes out through a chimney at a temperature of approximately 575 °C. At Baghabari power plant, the maintenance of engine is done every 1000 hours.

Components of Gas turbine

Compressor

Compressor is an important part of a gas engine. The air or gas that is passed through the compressor is reduced in volume and it gets pressurised. It also increases the burn rate and the speed of the mixture. Besides, air carries different type of dust. The compressor also removes that dust from air.

Combustion Chamber

In this section the hot air must be allowed to flow into the combustion chamber. The natural gas is inserted into the combustion chamber. The high temperature and high pressure products of combustion passes through the turbine and rotate it. There are total 14 combustion chambers in a unit and all combustion chamber are connected to each other.

Start-up motor of Gas Turbine power plant

Start-up motor is one of the most important parts of a gas turbine. By this start-up-motor the turbine removes the inertia. When the turbine speed is 750 rpm and rotor speed is 1600 rpm, motor runs separately. But when turbine speed turns to 2300 rpm, excitation is started. At the end, turbine speed raises up to 3000 rpm at no load condition.

Generator of Baghabari power plant

In Baghabari power plant there are two units of generators. First unit’s capacity is 100 MW and the second unit’s capacity is 71 MW. They have used different types of generator for two units. Mark-5 generator for first unit and Mark-6 generator is used for second unit. Both are 2 poles and three phase generator and the generated voltage is 11KV.

Cooling system

In Baghabari power plant they have used two types of cooling system. One is Lube oil and another one is water cooling system. For internal cooling of the turbine bearing, they have used lube oil cooling system.

Fuel control system

In Baghabari power plant for fuel control system they have used two types of valve. One is safety relief valves (SRV) and another is Gas control valves (GCV).

Safety relief valves (SRV)

Safety relief valves protect the gas receivers and other equipment from over pressure of gases of pipelines.

Protection system

In Baghabari power plant for protection purpose, and Current transformer (CT), Potential transformer (PT), Lighting Arrester and SF6 circuit breaker are used.

In Baghabari power plant for their auxiliary system they have take power from the grid line. To run the auxiliary system they need 0.4 KV power. For back up protection they have also used DC supply only for control room. The auxiliary system of Baghabari power plant uses water pump for cooling system.

Generated voltage and supplying voltage

In Baghabari power plant their generated voltage is 11Kv and the supply voltage is 132KV. They have used Power transformer to step up the voltage 11/132KV and supply 132KV to the grid.

In control room they can monitor all the system of the

easily observed it which part of the power plant is faulty condition. On the other hand they can control the gas control and inlet guide valve from the control room. They can also monitor the turbine speed, exhausted temperature etc from control room.
